What it asks of a school
Bellies fed. Bodies safe. Identities held. The floor under everything else a school promises to do.
A school is never neutral about needs. Either it's actively meeting them — food, mental-health access, a safe bathroom, a consistent ride — or it's asking students to work around what isn't being met. Learner-centered schools take the meeting on.
What it looks like
Breakfast and lunch that's reliably good and easy to access. A counselor or social worker the students actually know. Bathrooms students can use without fear. Clear, fast responses when a student names harm.
Resources for caregivers — transportation, childcare for student-parents, translators — that don't require asking the same question three times.
Why it matters
Maslow before Bloom is shorthand for an old truth. Unmet need is one of the most reliable predictors of disengagement; until basic needs are addressed, every other school promise gets thinner.
